چکیده

One of the most common bacteria in tropical to subtropical seawater, Vibrio vulnificus is an invasive, gram-negative bacillus and recognized as a cause of fulminant primary septicemia, wound infections and gastrointestinal disorders. In the United States, it is found predominantly along the coastlines of those states that border the Gulf of Mexico, but has also been isolated from areas in New England and the northern Pacific Coast. Vibrio vulnificus infections can occur in patients with underlying liver disease, who have acquired the organism through the gastrointestinal tract after recent consumption of raw shellfish, or through inoculation of bacterium through contamination of a wound with seawater.

Septicaemia secondary to Vibrio vulnificus cellulitis.

Vibrio vulnificus is a naturally occurring, salt-water bacteria found in estuarine and coastal waters worldwide. It prefers low salinity and warm water temperatures for optimum growth. Infection from Vibrio vulnificus is uncommon, although it has been reported from many locations (e.g. southern United States of America, Israel, Republic of Korea, Japan, Taiwan, Spain, Turkey). It can be serious...

Vibrio vulnificus infection: diagnosis and treatment.

Vibrio vulnificus infection is the leading cause of death related to seafood consumption in the United States. This virulent, gram-negative bacterium causes two distinct syndromes. The first is an overwhelming primary septicemia caused by consuming raw or undercooked seafood, particularly raw oysters. The second is a necrotizing wound infection acquired when an open wound is exposed to warm sea...

A fatal case of Vibrio vulnificus cellulitis with septicaemia.

Vibrio vulnificus is a gram-negative marine bacterium that may cause local wound infection, distinctive soft tissue infection, gastroenteritis and septicaemia with a high mortality rate. A healthy man presented with severe abdominal pain, diarrhoea and fever followed by development of multiple blisters, cellulitis and necrotizing fasciitis of the lower limbs, who progressed rapidly to fulminant...

Isolation of Vibrio vulnificus from Seawater and Emerging Vibrio vulnificus Septicemia on Jeju Island

Vibrio vulnificus is an opportunistic human pathogen, transmitted from seawater, raw oyster, and shellfish and responsible for severe septicemia. We studied V. vulnificus from surface seawater around Jeju Island between 2010 and 2011. In 2010, V. vulnificus was isolated and V. vulnificus septicemia was reported. Surface seawater temperature is an important factor for growth of V. vulnificus, an...

Bactericidal effects of toluidine blue-mediated photodynamic action on Vibrio vulnificus.

Vibrio vulnificus is a gram-negative, highly invasive bacterium responsible for human opportunistic infections. We studied the antibacterial effects of toluidine blue O (TBO)-mediated photodynamic therapy (PDT) for V. vulnificus wound infections in mice. Fifty-three percent (10 of 19) of mice treated with 100 microg of TBO per ml and exposed to broad-spectrum red light (150 J/cm(2) at 80 mW/cm(...
